The
Chuck D. & Jawnee Anthology [edited] (2005) Starring: Written by: Edited and
Directed by: The latest video for a new sketch comedy show written and performed by Chuck Dauble and "Jawnee" Conroy. It premiered on Monday, January 24th at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre as interstitial bits during their show. This is a slightly edited version. This shoot was more ambitious and (a bit) more difficult than their previous show's video, but I think the result of the (harder) work was some good, funny stuff. I always have a great time working with these guys. Special thanks to Tony Carnevale for providing some technical assistance.

Intro
to The Chuck D. & Jawnee Show (2004) Starring: Written by: Edited and
Directed by: I made this video for a sketch comedy show written and performed by Chuck Dauble and "Jawnee" Conroy. It premiered Monday, May 17th at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre as part of their show. It was incredibly easy to work with these guys, and each section required only a couple of takes each. The only mishap was when Jawnee poured the "paint" (chocolate sauce) on his shirt prematurely. We had to redo the shot with a new t-shirt.

The
Fun Squad Episodes 1 - 4 [Channel 102 series] (2005) Written and
Starring: Videography
by: Edited by: Directed
by: Episode 1 was the winner of the first Channel 102 screening. It's interesting, because neither Will or I were sure about how well it would go over. I guess we're both neurotic types who assume the worst. When Will brought all the footage to me, I had no idea what I would be looking at, and I had no prior knowledge of how it was to be put it together. I was honestly a bit worried at first, but, in actuality, it cut itself together in a fairly straightforward fashion. Will insisted that we use ALL of the farting guy and nut punch/nut kick transitions as possible. A smart choice! A lot of other little touches made us happy, like the "fade" transformation of Freddy Fun (which makes his transformation look even lamer), the freeze frame of the 3 guys under "The Fun Squad" opening title, the "Fin" at the end of the cartoon (well, I liked that anyway), and sound effects on all the wipes. I also got to play with Apple's LiveType program (which comes with FCP) for the text during the character introductions. Fun Squad, indeed. However, I think the best thing that we did with it was to make it tight and move at a good pace. Episode 2 came in second place at the second Channel 102 screening. Again, we had no idea how well it would be received at the screening. With trying to create a return episode, there is the question of whether to change the show or to just do it again exactly the way you did it the first time. Personally, I am glad Will tried some new ideas and took some chances, and we (in my opinion) made it tighter. You can always look back and think of some correction or another... but now there's EP 3 to think about. Episode 3 was an even further departure from the first episode, but I think in a good way. I loved Will's choice of going into "Flopland" in the second, and loved introducing a "regular"/skeptical person into "Funland" this time around. Jackie did a great job. She came up with some great bits that I don't think anyone else could have come up with (or pulled off nearly as well.) Of course, because we are morons, while editing we were a bit unsure about how people would react to it. "If we're going to be cancelled, I am fine that it would be for trying something new," Will said. (Trying to maintain a positive attitude is something we both constantly work at.) The 102 vote is still pending, but I'm happy with the way it turned out nonetheless. Episode 4 was the last episode (Fun Squad was cancelled by the latest Channel 102 audience.) It was interesting, the way it was conceived, and also how it finished. Will's initial idea was to do a "second pilot" to get people who had never seen Fun Squad interested in it. Later, we felt that it might be a step backward to ignore the "Flop" aspect of the "story". At the last minute, we shot and edited in some footage of Freddy Flop in what appears to be a therapy session. Will and I were excited about the additions, but I don't know if the audience particularly enjoyed them. Nevertheless, a few people said they felt like they signaled "an end." How right they were! In fact, the very last line of the episode is... "I'm sorry, but our time is over." It seems to make sense. All in all, it was a great experience to work on this series with Will, Rob, Matt, as well as Mitch Magee, Kevin Cragg, Julie Klausner, and Jackie Clarke. They are all incredibly smart and funny people. Fun, indeed!

Guy
Talk (2004) Starring: Engineered
and Edited by: Written and
Directed by: Will, over IM one day, asked me if I would help him with a short film idea. Audio recording a script he wrote and then editing it together with a handful of still images grabbed from the internet. Again, like El Bocadillo, this film was more of an editing exercise for me. How much can be done with audio and still images? I think a lot can be conveyed in just the editing, especially with awkward silences and cutting between the still images.

Kerry
On [Channel 102 pilot] (2005) Starring: Videography
and Credit Sequence by: Written,
Edited and Directed by: This was a Channel 102 pilot that we shot around February and finally got around to finishing in June. I think, at first, the Fun Squad show was taking up a lot of time, so it was shelved. Then, we just got lazy. In the end, I gave all the files to Will to edit. The pilot was rejected by the 102 committee and while there are a lot of flaws, I think there is a lot of fun stuff, especially Rob's performance as John Kerry. I do love editing credit sequences and this was no exception. Being able to shoot and edit Rob running away from a speeding car was great fun. Also, this is a test of using Quicktime 7's "H.264" codec for making internet viewable clips, which makes for a very high quality movie file that is about a half the size of the same movie using Sorensen 3. And, it looks better too. You will need to install Quicktime 7 to watch this.

Writer's
Block [Channel 102 pilot] (2005) Starring: Videography
and Editing by: Directed
by: This was a Channel 102 pilot that we shot in August. It, like "Kerry On", was rejected by the 102 "primetime panel". Similar to that pilot, I think this turned out quite well and I believe would have been well received at the screening. The shoot was tough. I was sick and the location for all of the shots were in New Jersey (which required an early train, and thus, not much sleep.) Thankfully all of the shooting happened in and around Margot's childhood home, which was comfortable. After shooting, I ended up drinking, so by the very end I was sick, tired, and drunk. I slept for 12 straight hours afterward. Because the piece was mainly improvised by the cast, I feared that editing would be a nightmare, but I actually finished it fairly quickly. Several scenes did not make it (due to the strict 5 minute time limit for 102), but the essential bits are here. I think overall the piece moves at a good pace and the cast is funny. Neil Casey's Dickens character is especially hilarious.

Tame
Your Crazy Legs [Channel 102 pilot] (2005) Starring: Written by: Directed
and Edited by: Rob Lathan had a funny premise, a "Curb Your Enthusiasm"-style show, except the protagonist is on stilts. Apparently, Rob's had "stiltwalker" listed on his acting resume for a while, but had only really done a small amount of actual stiltwalking at camp many years ago. He bought a pair of professional stilts aptly named "Crazy Legs", which was the inspiration for the title of the pilot. Lots of good performances in the pilot. I especially enjoy watching Rob and Lennon as well as Rob and Rocco. Those conversations feel real to me. Technically, I probably could have done a better/cleaner job with shots, lighting and sound, but I usually think that with these pilots. (Time to invest in a lighting kit! And boom pole!) As with most Channel 102 pilots I've shot recently, this one did not make the screening. And, as always, I think that it should have! I was definitely happy with the outcome. Tame that crazy Prime Time Panel!

The
Chuck D and Jawnee Show [Channel 102 pilot] (2005) Starring: Written by: Directed
and Edited by: I'm not sure what everyone else might make of these guys but they definitely make me laugh. Finally, Chuck and Jawnee wrote a Channel 102 pilot and I'm glad they asked me to work on it. It was, as all of their shoots are, fun and very "quick and dirty". ("Dirty" could also refer to Jawnee's apt. in Queens.) As expected this did not make the Channel 102 screening, but I think, for the uninitiated, Chuck and Jawnee might be bewildering. However, how can you not laugh when Jawnee "Begs to Diffah, Chuck?" This also was my first attempt at doing "greenscreen" shots, which actually turned out ok. More experiments in greenscreening to come.

Standing
Tall [Channel 102 pilot] (2006) Starring: Written by: Videography
and Editing by: I've been working on a lot of "quick" Channel 102 submissions, which I am more than happy to do. They're more about the concept and having fun rather than trying to be "slick", which, I think is important considering the general concept of 102. I don't discount a well shot and polished piece, but I think sometimes that stuff gets overemphasized, judging by some of the pieces sent in. "Standing Tall" was great fun to make and we were able to complete the main shoot in about 3 hours. Although it's not necessarily a fact that I am proud of, I was happy that it was selected to be screened during the January Channel 102 screening (a final 5 pick out of a field of around 25 entrants) despite the fact of how fast we did it. Although it did not get selected for continuation and it's far from "polished", I am definitely happy with the outcome. Kirk, Lathan, LeMar, Gabrus and Jawnee were all hilarious. I think people still haven't gotten enough stilt comedy! (Although I could be wrong.)
